Juneteenth is a holiday commemorating the emancipation of slaves in the U.S. The holiday takes its name from a combination of “June” and “Nineteenth” and marks the day when Union Major Gen. Gordon Granger and his troops arrived in Galveston, Texas with news that the Civil War had ended and slaves were free.
Juneteenth was made a federal holiday in 2021.
Because June 19th fell on a Sunday this year, the federal government declared Monday, June 20th as the day Juneteenth will be observed. As such, government offices are closed, and mail will not run-on Monday. Retailers – including large ones such as Walmart and Target – will remain open.
Walmart will be open Monday, June 20th with regular hours, typically 6 a.m.-11 p.m. Some services, such as pharmacies, may be closed or on a shortened schedule, so check ahead.
Target is also open on Monday. Most of its stores will be open 8 a.m.-10 p.m.
