Damage from severe storms and a possible tornado has been reported in north and northeastern Madison County, but authorities say there were no fatalities.
Reports from the Hazel Green area said there are downed trees and damage to some structures. Jeff Birdwell, director of the Huntsville-Madison County Emergency Management Agency, Saturday night confirmed damage to homes.
According to the Madison County Sheriff’s Department, the areas of Charity Lane and Nix Road are closed for traffic due to storm damage. People are asked to find alternate routes if they are in the area. The area just north of Huntsville is one of the fastest-growing in Madison County with many new homes and multiple subdivisions in areas previously used for farming.
The Sheriff’s Department said the Walmart, Hibbett’s Sporting Goods and Verizon stores at the intersection of Charity Lane and U.S. 431 have some structural damage. Huntsville Utilities said service has been restored to parts of Hazel Green but work continues with multiple downed power poles in the area.
Madison, Morgan Cullman, Marshall, Jackson, DeKalb, Limestone, Franklin and Lawrence counties remain under a tornado watch until 2 a.m.
