HUNTINGTON - After nearly 12 weeks and $4 million invested into renovations at Huntington's U.S. 60 Walmart, the business is ready to offer new amenities to help ease its customer's busy schedules.
Store manager Tennyson Thornberry said the updates include a new electronics department, updated areas, signage and more throughout the store itself.
The store now features a site-to-store hub, which is a floor-to-ceiling cylinder that holds the customer's orders until they appear with a bar code on their phone to claim the items.
By the end of May, the store will also offer grocery pickup.
Thornberry said he was most appreciative of the new associates who will be kept on after they were hired to help with the remodel. The store employs more than 400 local residents.
Thornberry thanked customers for their cooperation through the changes.
"Our customers weren't excited at the first start of changes," he said. "But I think they're excited to get it over like we are and get back to normal business. It really wasn't bad for the 12 weeks total, but being at the end of it is exciting to get back to normal business and taking care of the customers.
Along with a ribbon cutting ceremony Friday morning, many vendors were at the store, and will be back Saturday, April 28, with free samples and offering photos with various costumed characters.
Heiner's Bakery was also on hand offering free breakfast and lunch for shoppers throughout the day. Jacey Fuller, a local Nashville recording artist, spent Friday evening playing music outside of the store.
Chris Rockenstein, marketing manager for Walmart, said renovations like this typically happen every six or seven years.
"One thing always on the customer's mind is, 'Would you stop moving everything,'" he said. "Typically, in this case we haven't. In this case, yeah, we did a little bit, and we are sorry. We will take you to the items to get you used to it, but it's necessary for us to transform our stores on occasion like this."
If customers have an issue finding items that might be in a new location, the Walmart phone app offers "search my store," a feature that will tell you an aisle location for any product.
During Friday's ceremony, Walmart donated $2,500 to the Huntington City Mission, $1,000 to the Marshall Artist Series and $500 to the local Autism Society.
Two promotions also were announced. Hedi Brown and DJ Adkins were promoted to assistant manager training to become assistant managers.
Huntington Mayor Steve Williams and Bill Bissett, president and CEO of the Huntington Regional Chamber of Commerce, were both on hand for the ceremony.
