Walmart will close Towson store in April - Baltimore Sun

Walmart plans to close its Towson store after 20 years as a major anchor of Towson Place, the mass discounter said Wednesday.

The two-level big box store, a former Montgomery Ward, has underperformed and will close April 5. The pharmacy will close that day as well.

All 207 employees are eligible to transfer to other Walmart locations and will be paid through June 14. Eligible workers who do not transfer will be offered severance pay.

The Arkansas-based retailer, which runs nearly 5,000 stores across the U.S., is calling the move a business decision reached after a review showed the Putty Hill Avenue store has not met financial expectations and has not performed as well as hoped.

“We are grateful to the customers who have given us the privilege of serving them at our store in Towson,” said Alicia Anger, a Walmart spokeswoman, in an email to the Baltimore Sun. “We look forward to continuing to serve them at any of seven other locations across the area, on walmart.com and through delivery to their home or business.”

There are Walmarts nearby in Cockeysville, Nottingham and East Baltimore.

The retailer plans no additional closures at this time. Walmart employs more than 17,350 people at 60 stores and Sam’s Clubs in Maryland.

The pharmacy staff will work with customers to transfer prescriptions to other Walmart locations.

The company has invested hundreds of millions of dollars in store remodels and expansion of online grocery pickup, in-store pickup and grocery delivery services. The Towson Walmart was last remodeled in 2016.

Walmart closed a store in Owings Mills in summer 2021 after failing to renegotiate a lease with its landlord.

The discounter closed at least 22 stores in 14 states last year, and it closed two locations in San Diego, California, and one in Ohio in February because of financial underperformance, Business Insider reported. Other national chains such as Rite Aid and Macy’s have been scaling back.

Macy’s, an anchor at Baltimore’s largest suburban malls, announced it would close 150 unproductive department stores in a turnaround plan over several years, though it has not disclosed specific locations.
