Driver crashes into Middletown Walmart, barricades self for hours - WLKY Louisville

A car crashed into the Walmart in Middletown Monday morning, and then he barricaded himself for hours.Middletown Chief of Police Robert Herman said that it started a little after 4 a.m. after a man drove a car into the Walmart liquor store off of Shelbyville Road.Herman said the car went through the store's sliding door and into the hallway before stopping.He said the driver, a man in his 30s, appeared to be in mental distress and a relative told them he was having a mental crisis. After the man refused to get out of the car, LMPD was called for assistance. Officers said they made contact with the person, but they put the car in reverse and tried to drive out.SWAT units called to the scene were able to successfully remove the man around 6:30 a.m. without further incident.No one was injured, and the driver was taken to UofL Hospital for evaluation and involuntary hospitalization.Police said there was also a small fire at the scene, though they don't know how that started yet.Neither store was open for business during the incident.A little after 7 a.m., the scene began to clear out.
