Car crashes into Middletown Walmart on Monday morning - WDRB

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A car crashed into a Walmart on Shelbyville Road in Middletown early Monday morning.

The car reportedly rammed into the wine and spirit section of the store around 4:12 a.m. Monday.

Middletown Police Chief Robert Herman described the incident as a "mental crisis," prompting the huge police and fire presence on the property.

LMPD Crisis Negotiators were called in to speak with the man, who was believed to be in his 30s, according to officials.

LMPD spokesman Dwight Mitchell said the man made multiple attempts to put the vehicle in reverse and drive out, but LMPD SWAT/HNT were able to successfully remove him without incident.

Herman said the man came out of the store on his own about 6:30 a.m.  He also said the man's mother called dispatch to report her son.

The man was then transferred to UofL Hospital for an involuntary hospitalization.

Herman estimated the crash caused thousands of dollars in damages to the Walmart.

A small fire did break out connected to the crash, but it was quickly brought under control by fire officials.

Officials believe the man did not have any criminal intent, and they are looking into whether he will be charged.

No injuries were reported, and the subject's name has not been released.
