Heads up! Your next Walmart delivery may drop from the sky.
The major retailer is expected to expand its drone delivery service in 2023 after adding six states to the program last year, according to the Krazy Koupon Lady.
Certified pilots, who follow FAA guidelines, fly the robots that can carry packages up to 10 pounds within 1.5 miles of a drone delivery hub. The company claims that they can deliver orders in 30 minutes or less.
Now, 36 Walmart stores across seven states have DroneUp, Flytrex and Zipline delivery hubs that opened by Jan. 5, 2023. Walmart says that these hubs made over 6,000 deliveries by January.
Here’s everything you need to know about Walmart’s drone delivery service.
Which states offer Walmart’s drone delivery service?
Seven states offer Walmart’s drone delivery service. The company originally launched drone delivery in 2021 in its home state of Arkansas.
The service expanded to 36 stores across six other states by December 2022: Arizona, Florida, North Carolina, Texas, Utah and Virginia.
How does Walmart’s drone delivery service work?
The delivery service is available daily between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m.
Shoppers can make an order via the Walmart app or website, or droneupdelivery.com for a delivery fee of $3.99. Walmart+ members can use the service for free.
An employee from the nearest drone hub will gather the items in the store, enter each item on a smart phone and pack it in a box, according to USA Today.
Then, the employee will load it onto a drone and send it off to its delivery location. Shoppers can keep track of the process, as they will receive notifications when their order is being filled and shipped.
Shoppers can order over 10,000 eligible items for delivery, including groceries, with no minimum order amount. However, the limit weight of each package is up to 10 pounds.
According to Walmart, customers’ five favorite drone delivery orders:
- Great Value Cookies & Cream Ice Cream
- two-pound bags of lemons
- rotisserie chicken
- Red Bull
- Bounty paper towels
When will Walmart’s drone delivery service arrive in other states?
Walmart has not yet announced where it will launch its drone delivery service next.
However, the company is eyeing more locations to introduce the service across the country.
“4,700 stores [are] located within 90% of the U.S. population, making Walmart uniquely positioned to offer drone delivery at scale,” Walmart said.
