EVANSVILLE − Evansville police say a former employee opened fire inside the West Side Walmart on Thursday night, injuring at least one person before he was killed by officers.
EPD spokeswoman Sgt. Anna Gray identified the shooter Friday morning as 25-year-old Ronald Ray Mosley II. He previously worked for Walmart.
The victim was a current employee, Officer Taylor Merriss said during an update from the scene on Friday. She didn't release the victim's name and didn't know her current condition, but said she believes the victim "was able to talk when she was taken away from the scene.”
EPD will have a news conference later on Friday. Chief Deputy Coroner David Anson said in a news release that an autopsy for Mosley had been scheduled, but he didn't specify when.
According to court records, Mosley was charged with four misdemeanor counts of battery in May. He was eventually deferred to Vanderburgh County's mental health court, and was scheduled to appear for a progress hearing on the afternoon of the shooting. Court records don't say whether he showed up.
The Indiana protective order database listed five protective orders against Mosley, all of which were issued in May and August of last year. The orders from May state Mosley had not yet been served. The names of the people who filed them aren't listed.
Emergency dispatchers received a call about the shooter at 9:59 p.m. on Thursday. Seven EPD officers and one Vanderburgh County Sheriff's deputy responded to the scene and entered the store immediately to find the shooter.
"There were multiple officers looking for the offender," Merriss said. "And he could come around the corner at any time."
The shooting spread through multiple areas of the store as customers and employees tried to hide or escape. Merriss described the body camera footage as "eerie."
“He would shoot at officers and move,” Gray said.
The shooting lasted about 15 minutes, Merriss said. According to body camera reviewed by police, Mosley attempted to exit the store but was met at the door by officers. He went back inside and was eventually killed by responding law enforcement.
The department said there could be as many as 50 witnesses. Dozens of officers from the Evansville Police Department, Vanderburgh County Sheriff's Office and Indiana State Police were on scene Thursday night, with ambulances also parked in front of the store.
“A lot of people were fleeing,” Gray said. “We do ask that any witnesses call in if they have information.”
The store is located at 335 S. Red Bank Road, just south of the intersection of the Lloyd Expressway and Red Bank Road. It was still closed as of Friday morning.
