Walmart requests shoppers wear masks, deletes post - Daily Mountain Eagle

Beginning today, Walmart in Jasper will be requesting all customers wear protective face masks when shopping in the store, according to a post made to the store's Facebook page on Tuesday.

By 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, the post had been removed from the Jasper Walmart page.

“Begining tomorrow, 7/15/2020, Walmart is requesting that all customers wear a protective facemask while shopping in the store,” the post read. “We understand this is an inconvenience to some but we respectfully ask that you wear a face covering to help promote Covid19 safety for our customers and associates. Please help us curb the spread.”

The Daily Mountain Eagle reached out to local management for comment regarding the Facebook post but was directed to Walmart's National Media Relations.

Walmart Corporate said in a statement to the Eagle that the company is “taking all measures necessary to safeguard the well-being of those inside our stores, fulfillment centers and distribution centers.”

“We have been working to ensure our stores are cleaned and sanitized regularly,” the statement read. “We are focused on serving our customers and keeping our associates safe during this unprecedented time and we’ve implemented several measures in consideration of guidance by the CDC and health experts intended to help bring peace of mind.”

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Walmart has required all store associates to wear masks since April 20, adjusted store hours to 7 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., and enacted “deep-cleaning and sanitizing protocols with guidance from the CDC Walmart's Chief Medical Officer.”

Walmart did not say if the decision for masks at the Jasper store was made at a local level or if it was a corporate decision.

While the City of Jasper passed a resolution strongly encouraging the use of face masks, there is currently no city-wide mandate in place as seen in other Alabama cities.
