Easton resident Diane Miller was unpacking her new crayon melter when a small business card caught her eye.
Inside the Crayola product packaging was a yellow card warning her about the supposed dangers of child vaccinations. The card claims childhood vaccinations are responsible for infant deaths in the United States and informs parents of “vaccine adverse events.”
“It was disturbing. Obviously it didn’t belong in that toy,” she said.
She bought the toy Sunday, Feb. 16, at the Walmart in Lower Nazareth Township. She’s a psychotherapist and the toy is for her young patients to play with.
She wasn’t sure where the card originated so she asked questions on Facebook. Other shoppers said they found the cards in diapers they purchased in the same Walmart.
“I have received them a few times since my daughter was born in 2017,” Palmer Township resident Tammy Jennings told lehighvalleylive.com. She got the cards in packages of Pampers diapers from the Lower Nazareth Township Walmart.
Roxann Miller said she was confronted in the store while she was pregnant with her now-2-year-old son.
“People would stop me to talk to me and hand me pamphlets inside the store by the baby aisle where the kids’ toys are,” said the Easton resident, who described the pamphleteers as pushy.
Colonial Regional Police Chief Roy Seiple said he’s unaware of any complaints about the cards or anti-vaccination advocates at the store. Neither is Northampton County District Attorney Terence Houck. Corporate spokespeople for Walmart, Crayola and Pampers didn’t return messages seeking comment.
These complaints aren’t unique to the Lower Nazareth Walmart. A blog post from radio station FM 101.5 noted similar issues at a store in New Jersey. Another story references issues with the cards in Maine and Washington state.
A shopper complained about the cards last year on the Pampers Facebook page and was assured the cards did not belong in the brand’s packaging.
While the cards claim to “educate" shoppers about vaccination dangers, it’s important for all children to stay up to date on their vaccines, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Health.
“Getting your vaccinations can help protect those around you, such as those with compromised immune systems who cannot get vaccinated. Vaccine-preventable diseases can be very dangerous, may require hospitalization and can even result in death,” according to the health department press office.
More information about vaccines is available at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website.
