Walmart will be taking a new approach with how it handles returns and refunds, and is another step toward the store chain eliminating front-door greeter jobs.
Greg Foran, president and CEO of Walmart U.S., announced on March 6 at the UBS Global Consumer and Retail Conference that “customer hosts” will personally process returns at the front door of brick-and-mortar stores, Chain Store Age reports.
“You’re soon going to be able to do a refund right at the front door of the Walmart store,” Foran said at the conference. “We’re not going to ask you to go to the service desk.
The company announced in 2016 that it was transforming its traditional front-door greeter jobs into “customer host” positions, described as “an associate who greets customers, but also check receipts where appropriate, assists with returns and helps keep entrances clean and safe.”
The new role that would require more physical labor and the ability to help with theft prevention duties, which has raised concerns about what the new role would mean for employees with physical disabilities.
Foran explained customer hosts will be equipped to manage refunds, as well as provide customers with cash, at the front door, according to the report.
He did not give a timeline as to when the changes will be implemented.
