Two men were arrested after a fight inside a Jefferson County Walmart led to a shot fired outside the store.
The incident happened about 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the Adamsville store. Adamsville police Chief Warren Cotton said two men got into a physical altercation which then spilled over to the outside.
One of the men went to his car, retrieved a gun and fired a shot. Cotton said he doesn’t know if the shot was fired in the air or at another person but said no one was injured.
Investigators heard the altercation may have started over a woman, but also heard it may have stemmed from a dispute over a ball game. They are still trying to determine the origin.
An Adamsville police lieutenant was inside Walmart shopping when the fight and subsequent gunfire took place. That helped with quick apprehension of the suspects, Cotton said. “It definitely could have been worse,’’ he said.
Both men involved in the altercation were taken into custody. They face charges of affray and disorderly conduct. Additionally, the man with gun will face charges of reckless endangerment, discharging a weapon and possibly charges about the gun itself. The federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is looking into that aspect of the case.
The suspects’ names have not been released pending formal charges.
