Memorial held for Starkville woman shot and killed in Walmart

STARKVILLE, Miss. (WTVA) - Three weeks following Shauna Witt's death, her friends say they chose February 3, 2018 as a day to remember her and a day to remember her relationship with her friends, her family and her patients.

The memorial service was held at the chapel on Mississippi State University's campus.

"She was a loving daughter, she was an incredibly loyal sister, niece and friend," Shauna's friend Bo Oswalt said.  "She was a caring doctor and even in her last moments she put her patients safety above her own."

Shauna was an optometrist in Starkville.

Many people remember the disturbing video recorded after a man entered Starkville's Walmart and shot and killed her.

"Her life was cut short by a man she once loved but had spent the last month of her life trying to desperately get away from," Oswalt said.

Now, nearly a month later, Shauna's friends say they want to take this tragedy and turn it into a celebration of a woman who touched so many lives.

"Memorials and funerals do bring you together and we found out she was far better than we thought," Shauna's friend Janice Murphy said.

Since Shauna was very private, her family requested WTVA not attend her memorial.

But even as we noticed from the outside, her love was felt by every person who walked through the chapel doors.

"She was supportive and understanding and she loved everyone," Murphy said.

Her friends also describe her as passionate, loving, caring and jokingly told us she was very sarcastic and not one to like attention.

"She would hate it she would not like this at all, absolutely hate it," Shauna's friends all said jokingly.

That's why her memorial was more so about sharing laughter through memories so close to their hearts, than shedding a tear.

"Please continue to pray for us as we move forward without Shauna and we ask that you pray and think of all of the lives that have been impacted by this event," Oswalt said.
