Walmart's Supplier Mandate: Replenish Shelves Faster, And We'll Turn Over Customer Data

Walmart’s On Shelf Customer Availability (OSCA) data, which to date had only been accessible internally, is being shared at the company’s Supplier Growth Forum at its Bentonville, Ark. headquarters this week.

“We have reduced inventory in stores in order to have the right amount of stock and have made significant progress in the past few years,” Steve Bratspies, chief merchandising officer at Walmart U.S., told Reuters. “We want to focus on improving that even more.”

It has also starting to enforce more stringent merchandise-delivery deadlines on suppliers. Walmart now requires large suppliers to deliver full orders within a specified delivery window 85% of the time, up from a 75% threshold, or be fined 3% of the cost of goods, Bratspies told Reuters.

Walmart fired its latest salvo in its battle to compete with Amazon and play to the instant-gratification consumer mindset birthed by online shopping.

The retailer has made a data-in-exchange-for-speedy restocking product pact with the suppliers that line its shelves: It will share more data with its vendors if they in turn expedite replenishment of out-of-stock items, Reuters reported.
