The Cedar City Police Department is currently investigating a possible bomb threat at Walmart.
According to CCPD Sgt. Jerry Womack, an unidentified couple travelling through the area in a motor home are suspected of threatening to blow up the Walmart at 1330 South Providence Center in Cedar City at approximately 2:30 p.m. Sunday.
The threat was made after an employee approached the suspect in the parking lot because they were "making a disturbance," Womack told The Spectrum.
"One of the parties said he was tired of being harassed and said, 'I should blow this place up'," Womack said.
Police were called and the area was evacuated as a precaution shortly after.
The two individuals are currently in police custody.. They have not officially been charged with a crime at this time.
Womack said investigators believe it is not a credible threat.
"Officers are erring on the side of caution, but don't believe they have a bomb," Womack explained.
The St. George Police Department bomb squad is currently en route to the scene.
The motive for the threat is not known at this time, Womack said.
Walmart and the surrounding area is currently under evacuation. Officials are asking the public to stay away from the south end of town until the threat has been cleared. Traffic is being re-routed north and south at the intersection of Cross Hollows eastbound, just west of the Walmart.
Authorities expect the bomb squad to arrive from St. George around 4 p.m.
This is a developing story. The Spectrum & Daily News will continue to update as more information becomes available.
