WINFIELD, AL (WBRC) -

The Winfield Police Department is searching for Roman Chase Banks after a shooting Saturday at a Walmart in Winfield.

According to Chief Brett Burleson, police received a tip about a stolen car. On Saturday afternoon, a car matching the description of the stolen car was seen by police with at least two people inside. Banks was a passenger.

Burleson says officers tried to stop the car. Before that could happen, Banks forced the driver out at gunpoint and drove away.

According to Burleson, police chased Banks as he attempted to hit an officer in the Walmart parking lot. That’s when an officer fired shots at the car, hitting the rear tire. Still, Banks drove back onto the highway, leading officers on a short chase.

Burleson says Banks went off the side of the road and into the woods, where he then tried to ram another police unit and opened fire on the officers.  That’s when Banks left the car and ran away.

On Saturday, police said no one was shot. Walmart was placed under a brief lockdown.

Police consider Banks armed, dangerous and believe he is headed to Mississippi. People with information on where Banks can be found should call Winfield Police at (205) 487-4333.
