On Monday, Sept 25, protesters stood in Tate Plaza at the University of Georgia handing out hats and T-shirts with the phrase, “Trump and Walmart, make America worse” to students.
This scene was part of a rally hosted by Making Change at Walmart to show “ways that students can stand up for a better America against the Trump and Walmart agenda,” the press release said.
Young Democrats of UGA, and the Athens for Everyone UGA chapter also helped host the event.

The rally was one of 25 that MCAW is putting on at college campuses during September.
Speakers at the rally condemned the policies of President Trump which they said are bad for workers. They compared these policies to Walmart which has long been a target for organized labor unions that say the company pays unfair wages and benefits to its employees.
Kelly Happe, UGA associate professor and the president Athens for Everyone, was the first to speak at the rally.
In her speech, Happe promote the United Campus Workers of Georgia, a new union on UGA’s campus that is working to get the university to provide living wages for university workers.
Jess Cross, an administrative associate in UGA’s English Department and a representative of the union, also spoke about fair and living wages for campus jobs.
“The University of Georgia still pays minimum wage, not just to student workers but to facilities workers, maintenance workers,” said Cross. “It’s the biggest employer in Athens and its starving the city.”
Cross said the formation of the union began as a result of a revision in the Fair Labor Standards Act in 2016.
Candidates running for a seat in Georgia’s 10th Congressional District, Richard Winfield and Chalis Montgomery, spoke at the protest as well.
Winfield, a UGA professor of philosophy, gave his plans to instill guaranteed employment, fair wages and employee empowerment.
Montgomery also shared her views on supporting small businesses and workers’ rights.
