A: Shenita Marie Barnes and Gilbert Earl Smith are awaiting trial on three counts of robbery in connection with the February 2016 robbery of an Elk Grove Walmart store.

Smith also faces a trial on charges of attempted murder, robbery and possession of a firearm in the July 8, 2016 robbery and shooting of a Brinks security guard at Golden 1 Credit Union in the 4400 block of Florin Road in Sacramento.

In the Walmart case, Smith allegedly entered the store on Elk Grove Boulevard at Highway 99 about 2:10 a.m. Feb. 24, 2016 and went into the cash room using a copied management key, according to Elk Grove police. Once inside the cash room, he allegedly confronted an employee, brandished a handgun and demanded money. Smith left the store after receiving an undisclosed amount of cash.

Barnes, an assistant manager at the store, was identified as a suspect during the investigation and detectives were able to connect her to the robbery, according to police.

Smith and Barnes are scheduled for a settlement conference in that case on Dec. 15, according to Sacramento Superior Court records available online.

In the case involving the Brinks guard, Smith, armed with a gun and wearing a mask, allegedly approached the guard, who was exiting the credit union with a bag of money and walking toward the Brinks armored vehicle. Smith allegedly pointed the gun at the guard, told him to drop the money, then shot him, according to the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department. Smith picked up the money and the guard returned fire, wounding Smith.

A trial date in that case is set for Jan. 4, according to Superior Court records.
