Payment problems in Walmart - what is happening? - La Grada EN

Walmart keeps having problems with technology. After the recent rollback of their self-checkout kiosks because they were causing problems (just as we will see in this article, and more) and a recent lawsuit they settled because of the incorrect pricing of “weighed goods” and “bagged citrus”, a new issue has arisen.

Reports by Bloomberg News state that the retailer suffered technical issues on March 19 that “prevented price data from flowing to self-checkout kiosks at 1,600 stores”. This technology glitch caused the company to overcharge their customers on thousands of items including food, clothes and appliances. All of this across the country, becoming quite the scandal.

Given that Walmart operates more than 5,000 stores just in the United States, this glitch could have skewed profits for the retail giant in the millions. Thankfully the problem was quickly discovered, and measures were put in place not just to fix the glitch and ensure that it would not happen again, but to compensate the potentially millions of customers affected.

Walmart spokesperson, Mischa Dunton released an email stating the company’s quick action to fix the problem as soon as it was noticed “We’ve made it a priority to refund customers who were overcharged, and we did not take action on the undercharges with our customers.”

The company has yet to release numbers recounting the amount of money that was fraudulently charged to customers, the stores that were specifically affected or how they fixed the issue at hand. It is unclear of they will release a full report on the matter, but until they do, we will keep attempting to find out the details.

How the customers will be reimbursed or whether or not there will have to an internal audit is also something that has not been released, but if you believe you are of the affected individuals, please contact the retailer so that you can be adequately compensated for the issue.

Other Walmart scandals

The news come after Walmart announced in the new year their internet to upgrade and modernize their stores. The measures it started to implement, like the elimination of cahiers lanes in favor of self-checkout kiosks was the first nail on the coffin.

The rise in theft and consumers complaints because of the lack of cashiers, long lines, poor usability of the machines, increase in theater security and more that made the transactions so unpleasant, left the retailer swapping back the self-checkout kiosks for cashier lanes. The more than  $9 billion they invested to make the changes were not entirely wasted as some stores still keep a hybrid model, but some locations had to be entirely brought back to the cashier model for fear that customers would abandon them.

The second setback Walmart suffered was reported by the Wall Street Journal in February, when the company suffered an outage where thousands of registers were not able to process transactions. Only a few weeks later, Bloomberg reported the company also endured a glitch with its photo and vision centers earlier this year.

And last, but by no means least, the lawsuit Walmart settled early in the year for $45 million, in which the company agreed to pay a settlement to customers who had purchased from them “weighed goods” (like poultry, meat and fish) and “bagged citrus” since 2018 to January of this year. Allegations were made that Walmart and its employees were intentionally mislabeling products, especially those that were marked down in price so that customers ended up paying more for less weight than advertised. The retailer did not admit to any wrongdoing, but decided to settle so that the issue could be resolved.
