Derby Walmart shooter expected in court Thursday - WCAX

DERBY, Vt. (WCAX) - Vermont State Police have arrested a suspect in connection to a Wednesday shooting at the Derby Walmart.

21-year-old Wellington Arias of Boston, Massachusetts was taken into custody just before 6 p.m. on Wednesday.

Vermont State Police say they stopped a car traveling north on I-91 in Lyndonville going 97 miles per hour in a 65, and the operator was identified as Wellington Arias, who had been named earlier by troopers as the accused shooter.

The shooting happened in the parking lot of the Walmart in Derby after what police call a confrontation with a man named Jason Willey. During the encounter, police say Arias fired a round close to Willey, which ricocheted off of the pavement.

Then, Arias allegedly stole Willey’s gray Chevy Equinox. That car is still missing as Arias was stopped and arrested in a Nissan Altima.

Arias is being held without bail at the Northern State correctional facility on a number of charges including aggravated assault.

He’s expected in court on Thursday.
