Complete list of all Walmart locations that have closed in 2024 - La Grada EN

Walmart continues to make good on their plans for 2024 and news about new stores closing continue to plague the news. Three more stores are on the chopping block for this May, which brings up the total number of closures to eight since the beginning of the year.

The news are not unexpected as a series of closures were already announced at the tail end of 2023 when Walmart representatives announced the plans for the new year ahead. Four states will be the most affected by the already announced closures as corporate found that those locations were not as profitable as they should be.

As of now, the list of locations that have closed in the U.S in 2024 is:

California
  • 605 Fletcher Parkway, El Cajon
  • 40580 Albrae St., Fremont
  • Neighborhood Market – 4080 Douglas Blvd., Granite Bay
  • 2121 Imperial Ave., San Diego
  • 2753 E. Eastland Center Drive, West Covina
Maryland
  • 1238 Putty Hill Ave., Towson
Ohio
  • 3579 S. High St., Columbus
Wisconsin
  • Neighborhood Market – 7025 W. Main St., Milwaukee

The company has already notified employees at the California and Wisconsin locations of the store closures, and they have already been given the choice between a settlement and a transfer to another location. Since relocation is expensive, each individual case will probably be determined by each employees’ resources and the availability of jobs at nearby stores, if there are any.

The future of Walmart

Store closings are not the only measures Walmart is taking to improve its financial standing in a post pandemic world. On top of brick and mortar locations, the company is also shutting down its Walmart Health clinics along with its Walmart Health Virtual Care telehealth service. This service began to be offered in 2019 in Texas, Georgia, Florida, Arkansas, Illinois and Missouri and grew to 51 centers over the years, but it seems to be unsustainable for the brand.

Fans of the service should likely look into the initiative Costco has started along with Sesame Health, as it follows some of the same principles.

But the closings do not seem to indicate anything about the company’s overall health. John Furner, CEO of Walmart, announced at the beginning of the year a comprehensive plan to open 150 new locations all over the U.S (albeit in better locations than the ones being closed down) and renovate most of their older stores with new technologies and better flow for a better customer experience. The company has also started to implement sustainable policies that are not only cost saving measures for the company on the long run, but also will help the environment and their impact on the world. Some of the measures are energy efficient lighting, low impact refrigerators, and fast-charging electric vehicle stations.

The chain has been utilizing this first part of the year to test out some of the measures and policies, like self-checkout kiosks and pushing memberships by offering extra perks, that they had planned to implement. Not every one of those policies, like the kiosks, have been successful, but since it is a trial geared towards improving stores before committing to them in their new and improved locations, it is good data gathering for the company.

Despite all the turmoil and issues that have been reported, Walmart continues to be one of the biggest retailers in the U.S. The discount chain not only has the advantage of their in store presence being high, but the retailer has managed to transfer the experience to their online store and continues to grow in the virtual world where they are also looking for new ways to improve. One of this ways is a new drone pilot program that seems promising for the future of online shopping.
