Walmart unveils ‘Store of the Future’ shopping experience at mid-Michigan locations - MLive.com

Walmart was originally founded in 1962.

By the 1990s, the store exploded nationwide, becoming the No. 1 retailer in the country.

Trying to stay ahead of changes in the retail industry, Walmart has been implementing new approaches to create seamless shopping experiences that save customers time and serve their needs -- whether they choose to shop in-store, online or via mobile.

Now, Walmart is remodeling its existing stores across the state, including in mid-Michigan to become the “Store of the Future.”

The remodel features improved layouts, expanded product selections and innovative technology to help associates better support customers and make their shopping experience more convenient and enjoyable.

Locations in mid-Michigan include Burton, Clio, Saginaw and Midland.

“The biggest thing is we want to make sure that we’re constantly evolving and making sure that we’re meeting customers where and how they want to shop,” said Jake Gailey, regional general manager for Walmart’s stores across Michigan. “We’re constantly innovating.”

The concept is designed to elevate the customer’s in-store experience with the following improvements:

  • Activated corners: Displays at the corners of certain departments that pull customers in and help them touch, feel, and become a part of the space.
  • More space to discover: Walmart has created more space for customers to explore and discover the breadth and depth of what stores have to offer.
  • Digital touchpoints: Walmart offers online QR codes and digital screens.

In addition, Walmart recently announced its commitment to build or convert more than 150 stores in the next five years, while continuing the transformation of existing stores.

“It encompasses a lot of different initiatives, elevated brand shops and activated corners where you can bridge the gap between digital and physical,” said Gailey. “You can use the Walmart app to explore an expanded assortment or a variety of different options. We call those digital touchpoints. You’ll also see some innovations around our produce and deli areas.”

Remodeling projects at the Burton and Saginaw locations are expected to be done by the end of May, while the Clio location is expected to have its remodel complete in September.

Each store’s total remodeling cost is approximately $8 million, Gainey said.

“I encourage customers to come check them out at the grand openings as I think they will be pleasantly surprised with the innovations, upscale branding, different experiences through the stores,” Gailey said.
