Walmart store in Pell City involved in swatting incident - Alabama's News Leader

PELL CITY, Ala. (WBMA) — A Walmart store in Pell City was involved in a swatting incident Thursday afternoon, according to authorities.

The Pell City Police Department said it received a 911 call for an active shooting regarding two to three people in a break room.

Police said the caller gave a detailed accurate description, but 911 dispatch lost contact with them while officers headed to the store.

"This particular swatting call, because it did come in from an actual phone at the 911 center with all the details involved, we really thought there was an active mass shooting at Walmart," said Clay Morris, Pell City police Chief.

The store was evacuated, and officers cleared the store three times, but did not find anything.

Police said there was no active shooting and no injuries reported.

Morris recalled at least nine neighboring law enforcement agencies that responded to the call.

"Not only does it drain our resources but think about the emotional toll it has on every employee in the Walmart, the customers and our citizens," said Morris.

The police department said it is working in identifying the caller in order to bring charges due for prompting police response.
