COLUMBUS, Ohio – Walmart has announced it will close its store in the south end of Columbus because the outlet has not lived up to performance expectations.
The store, located in the Great Southern shopping center, will close Feb. 16, WSYX Channel 6 reported. The pharmacy will be shuttered March 4. The 180 employees who work at that location will be eligible to transfer to other stores in Greater Columbus.
“This decision was not made lightly and was reached only after a careful and thoughtful review process,” the company said in a statement cited by media outlets. “Unfortunately some [stores] do not meet our financial expectations. While our underlying business is strong, this store hasn’t performed as well as we hoped, and we made the decision to not renew the lease.”

The announcement comes just days after America’s largest retailer announced plans to add more than 150 stores and thousands of jobs over the next five years.
The company announced Wednesday it would also remodel 650 stores in 2024 in 47 states and Puerto Rico. The efforts toward modernization are a continuation of the retailer’s “Store of the Future” strategy that began in 2023.
But the company also has been closing stores that were struggling. The chain went through a series of closings in 2023, shuttering more than 20 stores, primarily as it reacted to theft issue and lower-than-expected sales. Already in 2024 the retail chain announced its plans to close two stores in the San Diego area that were underperforming.
Walmart has more than 4,600 locations in the United States, according to data company Scrape Hero.
