Target reportedly considering making Walmart, Amazon-type change - AL.com

Target is reportedly considering creating a paid membership program for its customers, similar to those offered by Amazon Prime and Walmart +.

The program, potentially called Project Trident, could launch as early as this year, according to a report from Bloomberg, who cited unidentified sources familiar with the matter. Bloomberg noted the plan could also involve Shipt, the grocery-delivery business Target bought in 2017.

While Target has yet to publicly mention the program, Bizjournals predicts the subject could come up as part of the retailer’s year-end earnings announcement in March.

Target recently announced the release of “dealworthy,” a line of low-cost products geared to budget-conscious consumers. Set to debut this month, the in-house brand features low prices on nearly 400 items including accessories, household essentials, beauty, and electronics. According to a fact sheet, the brand’s prices start at less than $1 and most of the items will be under $10.
