Products Sold At Walmart, Costco Recalled Amid Listeria Outbreak - Patch

ACROSS AMERICA — Salad products sold at Walmart, Costco and Winco were recalled Thursday amid a nationwide outbreak of listeria that has sickened at least 26 people and left two people dead.

Ready Pac Foods voluntarily recalled a limited number of cases of four salad kits as a result of an expanded recall by Rizo-López Foods, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said. The kits contain cheese that could be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, which can cause serious — and sometimes deadly — infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and people with weak immune systems. Additionally, a listeria infection can cause women to miscarry or lead to stillbirths.

After learning of an expanded recall Wednesday, Ready Pac investigated and found the following products may be impacted:

The kits were sold in bags, the FDA said. The UPC and best-by dates can be found on the front or the back of the package depending on the kit.

More than 15,000 cases were manufactured and distrubuted from December through February, the FDA said.

"Ready Pac has ceased all sale and distribution of the impacted products and any products in inventory will be removed and destroyed per FDA guidelines," the recall notice said.

Ready Pac urged customers who bought any of the affected products to throw them out, including the individual packets of cheese, or return them to the store for a refund.

The company has not received any reports of illnesses related to these recalled salad kits.

An Expanding Recall

The latest recall comes after health officials warned Trader Joe's products could also contain contaminated cheese.

On Thursday, the FDA said Trader Joe's recalled certain products containing cotija cheese. The cotija cheese used to produce the products was manufactured by Rizo-López Foods on Feb. 5.

Rio- López Foods recalled dairy items, including cotija cheese, under multiple brand names.

Trader Joe’s recalled all codes of the products listed below that were manufactured with cotija cheese and sold nationwide.

  • Trader Joe’s Chicken Enchiladas Verde (SKU 58292)
  • Trader Joe’s Cilantro Salad Dressing (SKU 36420)
  • Trader Joe’s Elote Chopped Salad Kit (SKU 74768)
  • Trader Joe’s Southwest Salad (SKU 56077)

As Patch previously reported, the outbreak has sickened 26 people across 11 states, mostly in the West and Southeast.

As of Tuesday, eight people were reported sick in California, four each in Colorado and Arizona, two each in Texas and Tennessee, and one each in Florida, Georgia, and North Carolina, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. One death was reported in California, and another in Texas.
