Bellingham takes legal action to begin clearing massive homeless camp near Walmart - KOMO News

BELLINGHAM, Wash. — A homeless camp with a history of trouble in Bellingham has led city leaders to agree to undertake legal action to clear the land.

The Bellingham City Council voted unanimously Monday night to pursue a nuisance abatement action against the property owner of a large, undeveloped parcel near Walmart. Neighbors in the area around East Stuart Road have been complaining about safety fears related to the drugs and violence that mark the homeless camp.

The nuisance abatement will allow the city to recover the costs to clear the camp by placing a lien on the property, and to potentially foreclose on the lien if necessary. According to county records, the property owner the city is taking action against is from Taiwan.

However, there are at least two adjoining parcels where tents are also spread out.
