The Mississippi mother who went viral after a Walmart employee posted a video of the woman's toddler seemingly wearing only a diaper in freezing temperatures was arrested for child neglect.
Kambria Darby, 26, was filmed while she was shopping at a Walmart in Byram – a suburb of Jackson, Mississippi – with her toddler who appeared to be shivering and wearing only a diaper in sub-freezing weather last week.
She was arrested after the incident and charged with contributing to the neglect or delinquency of a minor, according to court records. If convicted, she faces a maximum sentence of six years in prison.
In the video, the child was seen wearing nothing but what appeared to be his mother's puffy coat that witnesses in the video said he was not wearing when the two entered the store.
At one point, Darby appeared to toss a frozen package of food into the cart, which landed on the child's leg.
"Don't do that!" Felicia Nicole, the Walmart employee who filmed the encounter, could be heard saying. "Somebody call the police on her."
Nicole said she was fired from Walmart for sharing the video and a GoFundMe set up to support her lost wages raised over four times its goal of $5,000 by Thursday.
"The child had on no clothes, no socks, nor shoes, and I took it upon myself to record it for the child sake," Nicole wrote on the crowdfunding page. "No I wasn’t thinking about the consequences at the time, At that time my main focus was on that innocent poor child, and to get him some help."
Nicole said she and other shoppers called the police on Darby.
"We share the concern others have for the child in the video in our store in Jackson, Mississippi," a Walmart spokesperson wrote in a statement to The Messenger. "We don’t discuss personnel matters involving current or former associates."
"All associates are encouraged and empowered to use their judgment in contacting authorities when they see something that may be wrong, however all associates are also expected to follow the Walmart Code of Conduct," the company added.
