Deputies: Man facing charges for stealing Walmart cash register drawer in Flagler County - WESH 2 Orlando

A man is facing multiple charges for ripping a drawer full of money right out of a cash register at a Walmart in Palm Coast.Deputies say they were able to identify him in part because of the T-shirt he was wearing the day of the crime.Deputies knew they had their man when he posted a picture of himself online.Deputies said there was a surveillance picture of John Wakefield running out of a Walmart in Flagler County with a cash register drawer full of money tucked under his arm.At the time, they did not know who he was, but law enforcement wants to thank him for his choice of clothing and apparel. "The day of the incident, Mr. Wakefield had a bright red T-shirt that said Key West on it, which is a clue which we would call in law enforcement," Chief David Williams from the Flagler County Sheriff's Office said. According to deputies, it started on Dec. 10 when Wakefield snatched the drawer with about $3,500 in it, then high-tailed it out the door and pushed a Walmart employee who tried to stop him. "Was he in line to buy something?" WESH 2's Michelle Meredith asked."That I don't know if he was in line or saw an opportunity maybe when the cashier had their back turned to him, but he snatched the cash drawer out of the register, which means the register had to be open," Williams said. So, how did they figure out who he was?He rented a car, so they traced the tag number to his name.They used facial recognition. They put his face in the system and they got a hit. He posted a picture of himself wearing the red Key West T-shirt on social media. Deputies caught up with Wakefield in Orange County and in the trunk of his car, law enforcement says they found his favorite T-shirt. They got a hit on that facial recognition because Wakefield did a 9-year stint in state prison. "He had just been released from state prison. He had been arrested previously for robberies and similar types of crimes. So I guess this is what he does for a living," Williams said. Wakefield is now facing charges in not one but two counties. Law enforcement says in Flagler County, he's wanted for robbery, and in Orange County, he's facing multiple charges, including possession of meth.
