Gail Lewis has become an internet icon after going viral on TikTok for a video of her quitting her job at Walmart in Morris, Illinois, where she worked for 10 years.

When the viral video was posted on Nov. 16, people began to make up backstories about Lewis since not much was known about her other than she worked at Walmart for 10 years.

Now, people want to know more about the woman behind the viral moment.

Lewis posted a TikTok giving an emotional sign-off from her last shift of her long-time job, which she called “the end of an era.”

The viral video has been viewed 25.1 million times as of Monday afternoon and has garnered 3.2 million likes.

“Attention Walmart, this is Gail Lewis,” she said into a walkie-talkie. “10-year associate Morris, Illinois 8-4-4, signing out, good night.”

The video then cut to Lewis in her car getting emotional over her final day at the chain.

“So today was an end of an era for me,” Lewis said. “What you just saw was me signing out for the last time at my Walmart that I have worked at for 10 years.”

Lewis didn’t give her followers an exact reason as to why she’s leaving her decade-long job, but she did share that she got a new — and better — gig.

“It’s a happy sad because I’m gonna be going to a better job and those people became like family. I’ve been through a lot with them. They watched my back, I watched theirs. They helped me out, I helped them out,” Lewis shared.

“We even went through a f–king pandemic together,” she said about her coworkers. “It just hurts but it’s a happy sad because where I’m going, I’m gonna be better off where I’m at, that’s all.”

Lewis shared with NBC Chicago that she already started her new job and “loves the work.” However, she denied to disclose her new employer due to the amount of attention she’s gotten from the video.

In a Facebook message to NBC Chicago, Lewis shared that the reaction has been a “dream.”

“..Words really can’t describe my gratitude. It almost feels like a dream. I would never guess that this would get this kind of attention,” she said.

The Morris location’s store manager Carrie Moses told the outlet through Walmart corporate, “I am grateful to Gail for her service at the Morris, IL store, and she will be greatly missed. I wish her all the best on her future opportunities.”
