Walmart closing another store - AL.com

Walmart has announced the shutdown of another location.

The latest shutdown involves a Neighborhood Market location in Richmond, Virginia. The store is set to close on July 28th.

“We are grateful to the customers who have given us the privilege of serving them at our Brook Road Neighborhood Market location,” Walmart spokesperson Felicia McCranie said in a statement to Insider. “We look forward to serving them at our other stores in the surrounding communities including our Brook Road Supercenter just two miles away and on walmart.com.”

The shutdown is just the latest in a string of closures by the nation’s larges retailer. Poor financial performance was cited as the reason for the closures that include four stores in Chicago.

The four Chicago shutdowns – representing half of all the Walmart stores in the city – came after company officials said the locations lost tens of millions of dollars a year and that annual losses nearly doubled in the last five years.

“The simplest explanation is that collectively our Chicago stores have not been profitable since we opened the first one nearly 17 years ago – these stores lose tens of millions of dollars a year, and their annual losses nearly doubled in just the last five years. The remaining four Chicago stores continue to face the same business difficulties, but we think this decision gives us the best chance to help keep them open and serving the community,” Walmart said in a press release.

Walmart is also closing five e-commerce fulfillment centers across the U.S. and some of its “pick-up” only locations.
