Police on Monday were still searching for the driver of an SUV that struck and injured six migrant workers the previous day in Lincolnton, N.C., in what they said appeared to be an “intentional assault.”
The victims are “conscious and talking” to police, Maj. Brian R. Greene of the Lincolnton Police Department told The Washington Post early Monday. None of them recognized the driver of the vehicle when shown a photo, Greene said, “or had any other connection that we’re aware of” with the driver. He said the driver’s motive is unknown.
Police said in a statement that the crash took place around 1:15 p.m. Sunday outside the Walmart Supercenter on North Generals Boulevard in Lincolnton, a town roughly 35 miles northwest of Charlotte that is home to 11,000 people.
The workers suffered injuries that were not life-threatening and were taken to a hospital, police said.
The victims were seasonal workers who were employed at an orchard in Lawndale, about 20 miles west of the Walmart, Greene said. They were at the store that day to shop, he said.
Knob Creek Orchards in Lawndale confirmed in a Facebook post that their workers were involved.
Lincolnton police said the driver “was described as an older white male.” Police also released photos of the vehicle they said was involved, an “older model mid-size black [SUV] with a luggage rack.”
Greene said that although police were following up on tips they’d received from the community, neither the driver nor the vehicle had been found by Monday morning. “There’s been no real developments in the case,” Greene said.
He urged the public to come forward with any information about the driver or the vehicle.
Walmart spokesperson Joe Pennington said in an email Monday that the company is “aware of this incident” and is “working with local law enforcement as they investigate.”
