A couple who police said left their four children in a hot car while they shopped inside a Walmart for nearly an hour have been charged with endangering the children’s welfare.
It was Friday that police say Antonio Mabry, 23, of Wilmerding, and Derika Johnson, 25, of Pittsburgh, left their four children — all 6 or younger — locked in a vehicle with the windows up in the parking lot of a Walmart in North Versailles, Allegheny County, according to WTAE and WPXI.
Police received calls about the children. When they arrived, they said, the children were sweating through their clothes and didn’t have anything to drink. That day, it was 76 degrees outside, and it was hotter inside the car when the door was opened by the children.
Surveillance video showed the children were inside the car for 53 minutes, according to WPXI.
When Johnson and Mabry came back to the car, authorities told the two that their children’s lives were at risk. The pair claimed they had just left a park in Monroeville and that the children were sleeping so they went into the store.
Once paramedics were called, they evaluated the children and determined none needed medical attention, WTAE reported.
Mabry and Johnson have yet to be arraigned.
