
BENTONVILLE, Ark. -- Closures across the country by retail giant Walmart have affected thousands of jobs.
The changes at fulfillment centers involve workers in Pedricktown, New Jersey,; Fort Worth, Texas; Chino, California; Davenport, Florida; and Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. this year across the country not; tops 20 locations.obs by summer.
The closures are in part a response to sites that have not met expectations.
Walmart CEO Doug McMillon had warned coming into this year that closures could be possible, particularly at some sites where theft has been a problem with shoplifting on the rise and security becoming an issue.
McMillion warned that could lead to higher prices and closed stores if the problems persisted.
Recent closures in Chicago illustrate that theft is not the only issue. Walmart closed four of eight stores in the city to try to refocus efforts in four other stores that also were struggling.
At the time, the company said that collectively, its eight stores in Chicago had never been profitable since they opened nearly 20 years ago, losing tens of millions of dollars a year. Annual losses nearly doubled in the last five years, the company said.

As Walmart has announced closings, it also has pledged to help workers find employment at other company locations, where possible -- an effort that involves hundreds and hundreds of workers.
In Portland alone, closures in that city involved 600 employees. And that was just in two stores. The list of stores than have either closed or are expected to close this year across the country not tops 20 locations.
Hundreds more jobs were affected with Walmart reductions at order fulfillment centers. Workers at five sites were told in April they had 90 days to find jobs at other company locations.
