Succession: Roman Roy's Walmart T-Shirt Has Gone Viral. Here's Why - Esquire UK

On Monday night, British fans of Succession watched the Roy clan battle for the Waystar hot seat one last time. As we now know, it didn’t really work out for any of them. Shiv was betrayed by new owner Lukas Matsson, who instead gave the job to her estranged husband, while Kendall inherited Logan’s former security aid rather than the CEO title, and Roman seemingly said “fuck off” to the business world altogether. A pretty bad day for the trio, then.

And while the Twitter-sphere is abundant with clues that seemingly made the final result so obvious – did anyone actually guess it would be Tom from season three’s chicken-snatching scene? – there’s also been an expected interest in the finale costumes. Except this time around, the discourse has moved squarely away from the luxurious 'stealth wealth' wardrobes of previous episodes to a humble $13 kids T-shirt from Walmart.

After retreating to his mother's holiday home in the Caribbean following a bruising encounter with liberal protestors in New York (and an emotional breakdown at Logan's funeral), Roman is seen wearing a blue colour-block tee. It's a stark constrast from the dark, high-end suits the second-youngest sibling usually dons, and it didn’t go unnoticed. “This has to be the cheapest piece of clothes on the entire show” said one Twitter user, while others have been mourning the fact that the shirt has instantly sold out on the Walmart website. Either way, it's a hit.

Clothes have always been an integral part of 's appeal. Over the course of four seasons, viewers have been ushered into a rarefied world of subtle class signifiers, in which a tasteful navy sweater can say far more about a person's sky high social status than any premium logo. You’ll likely have heard of 'quiet luxury' or the aforementioned 'stealth wealth' trend by now: the idea that the truly wealthy and powerful eschew loud and flashy pieces for pointedly understated clothes. These items cost a lot of money, but you'd only know it if you're on their level. Take the sudden interest in luxury caps. Upon the airing of season three in 2021, fashion platform Lyst reported a 45% increase in plain, unextraordinary baseball caps, the kind that Kendall and Logan both frequently wore, with Brunello Cucinelli and Loro Piana being some of the most popular styles. And despite being a flippant accessory that the Roy’s don’t think twice about, for those of us without a dynasty to inherit, the £400 price tag smarts.

So, it’s kind of a big deal that Roman has scrapped luxe for low-end on this trip. With no explanation from the script, many have deciphered that he would have rushed to see his mother without a suitcase, and one of the staff will have likely gone to the nearest shop to get some island-appropriate clothing – even workaholic businessmen don’t wear suits to the beach, after all. But why is it from the kid’s section? Maybe it was left at the house by a younger houseguest, and Roman has thrown it on in absence of anything else. And if the children's clothes fit, why not wear it?

Out of the three siblings, Roman has always had a more relaxed approach to his wardrobe. His style sits between Logan and Kendall’s; not too traditional, but still not feeding off the young Business Bro vibe of his elder sibling. He favours an open collar to a tie and a more muted colour palette, but is always dressed ready for the board room. Except when he’s having a breakdown in Bim.

And no doubt, this is a very intentional move by Kieran Culkin. When interviewed for Motion Pictures, the show’s costume designer said that he is “very personal in selecting” the character’s looks, which suggests that the random sartorial choice is very reflective of Roman’s frazzled mindset. Running to mummy and wearing kids clothes is childish behaviour that Roman has adopted to deal with his father’s passing, and with the GoJo deal seemingly going ahead, stepping away from Waystar. It’s when he’s wearing this tee that Roman seems the most disenfranchised, lacking any desire to engage with Kendall’s business talk – “The early bird catches the Rome”, after all – nor the usual uniform.

Maybe this marks the end of Roman’s low-key luxury looks. Now fully out of the business, he doesn’t have to play or dress the part anymore. With no spin-off on the horizon, we'll just have to guess at the wardrobe he'll soon build for himself – but judging by that final smirk, I like to think that a trip to Walmart is in the offing.
