Layoffs at Walmart’s Bethlehem warehouse come at an awful time for 600 employees | Turkeys & Trophies - lehighvalleylive.com

TURKEY

Walmart gave notice this week to about 600 employees at its Bethlehem distribution center that they’ll be out of work by June. Inflation is hitting retailers across the country and even the largest retailers like Walmart are no exception. A Walmart corporate spokesperson told lehighvalleylive.com the employees will get 90 days’ severance pay. Explaining the layoffs, a Walmart spokesperson told CNN.com the company “recently adjusted staffing levels at our fulfillment centers in select markets to better prepare for the future needs of customers.” Customers’ needs? What about the needs of the 600 employees? Warehouse workers are among the most vulnerable to the pressures of inflation and now they’ll have to figure out a way to balance their budgets while looking for new jobs. Walmart said “the hope” is for these employees to transfer to other Walmart jobs. “Hope” doesn’t pay the bills when you’re laid off. We hope the largest retailer in the United States -- Walmart -- does right by these employees who need to find a way to pay their rent while Walmart restructures itself.

TROPHY

West Easton needed help this week. Lots of it. More than 20 fire companies from Pennsylvania and New Jersey answered the call to help battle the massive fire at a former Ingersoll factory turned into an industrial complex. The firefighters were joined by hazardous materials teams, emergency squads, state and federal agencies. The fire raged for a day and a half. Hot spots kept flaring up, bringing already worn-out firefighters back again. The volunteers who left their jobs and their families to help with the massive undertaking deserve recognition. There will be plenty of questions to answer in the coming days and weeks: What caused the fire? Was it intentionally set? Was it the result of negligence? Could it have been prevented? For now, though, we can take a deep breath and acknowledge the effort that went into bringing the fire under control. Asked whom to thank for the help, a grateful but overwhelmed West Easton Mayor Dan DePaul said “I don’t even know where to start.”
