A Pittsburgh police SWAT team responded to the Walmart department store at The Waterworks mall Tuesday evening after shots had been fired.
Wendell Hissrich, Pittsburgh Public Safety director, said the shooting happened outside Walmart. He believes the shooters were inside the store and came outside when multiple shots were fired.
The shooting occurred shortly before 5:30 p.m., according to Allegheny County 911 dispatch.
A blue car parked outside the store was hit by gunfire. Authorities say a man was in the back seat at the time of the shooting but was not hit.
“There was no connection whatsoever to the person that was in the vehicle and the suspects,” Hissrich said. “He was waiting for a relative that was inside the store.”
Hissrich said it is a miracle no one was shot.
“Somebody needs to go to church every Sunday,” he said.
Police were looking for four men.
Hissrich said one woman was being treated for some back pain after she tripped while evacuating the store.
SWAT officers searched inside Walmart to ensure no suspects were taking refuge inside. Hissrich said one suspect was believed, at one point, to be in the store.
A fire department ladder truck was brought in so police could search the roof.
By about 7:15, police said they believed that all four suspects had escaped and they were reopening the area around the store.
Police were reviewing store surveillance video.
Penn Hills residents Kevin Dumas and his wife, Nina, had just entered the store when they heard a popping sound. The two thought nothing of it until later when they were checking out some paper products and employees told them and other customers to evacuate.
Kevin Dumas said they learned of the vehicle being shot up and people began fleeing.
“Thank God we weren’t in the line of fire,” he said.
The couple went to the nearby Giant Eagle at the plaza. By the time they attempted to go back to Walmart, police had taped off the area.
Dumas said he never would’ve thought there would be a crime at this Walmart.
It is unclear how many people were in Walmart at the time of the parking lot shooting.
Freeport Road was closed for a time in both directions in front of the strip shopping mall.
