Walmart and Sam's Club will begin administering Pfizer COVID-19 vaccines at several locations in Summit and Portage counties starting Thursday.

The vaccine clinics are being done through the U.S. Federal Retail Pharmacy Program, which is a collaboration among the federal government, states and territories and 21 national pharmacy partners and independent pharmacy networks.

Those eligible to get the shot in Ohio can now schedule a vaccine appointment on Walmart's website, walmart.com/cp/1228302. The scheduler will also provide a digital reminder when it's time to return for the second vaccine, which is why customers are asked to create a profile.

Vaccines will be available to those who meet the current phase of vaccine eligibility in Ohio, which as of Thursday includes those age 60 and older; those working in child care services, funeral services and law enforcement; and those with specific medical conditions.

For a full list of those currently eligible, visit coronavirus.ohio.gov/vaccine.

Insurance is not required, and there is no cost to receive the vaccine. Appointments for the second vaccination will be made while at the first appointment. Walmart anticipates the clinics will take place over the next several weeks as allocation allows.

Locations administering the Pfizer vaccine include:

  • Walmart Supercenter, 2887 S. Arlington Road, Springfield Township.
  • Walmart Supercenter, 250 Tallmadge Road, Brimfield Township.
  • Sam’s Club, 1189 Buchholzer Blvd., Cuyahoga Falls.
  • Sam’s Club, 3750 W. Market St. Unit J, Fairlawn.
  • Walmart Supercenter, 1996 E. Main St., Ashland.
  • Walmart Supercenter, 3883 Burbank Road, Wooster.

Walmart said it's hosting vaccine events in "locations that prioritize access for those deemed most vulnerable, as well as operational capabilities." The company said it "factored in demographic information, local health needs, staffing and medically underserved data to identify initial locations where the company thinks it can make the greatest impact in increasing vaccine access."

“We have two goals as we administer vaccines: first, to get as many shots in eligible arms as possible so we can start the process of reopening our country, and second, ensuring equitable vaccine access across the communities we serve,” Dr. Cheryl Pegus, executive vice president of health and wellness, said in a statement. “We will continue finding new ways to increase vaccination access for our customers as we work towards the eventual end of the pandemic.”

Ohio mask mandate remains: Ohio won't soon follow Texas, Mississippi in lifting mask mandate, COVID-19 business restrictions

A reminder: Ohio, unlike Texas and Mississippi, still has COVID-19 restrictions in place

Walmart is partnering with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and states to help administer vaccines to eligible populations in 35 participating states, Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia.

As vaccine availability increases, the federal pharmacy program will expand to include more than 40,000 pharmacies, according to the CDC.
