Walmart Neighborhood Market, 1640 Airport Road, through the Walmart Community Grant Program recently provided a $2,000 donation to help the Emergency Food Box Program at Project HOPE Food Bank.
The funds will allow front-line workers to identify and alleviate hunger. They come from a variety of social agencies, including veteran's outreach, child advocacy, community counselors, school counselors, and medical workers, a news release said.
"The funding from the Airport Road Walmart Neighborhood Market, is so important to those facing a food crisis in our community," Ted Thompson, executive director of Project HOPE Food Bank, said in the release.
In 2020, the program experienced 50% growth over previous years. The identifiers praise the program because it allows those at an increased risk of contracting COVID-19 to remain in their homes and not be forced out to seek food, according to the release.
"We are seeing many caseworkers drop the food boxes at the doors of families that are in quarantine or isolation. Shelia, a medical caseworker, spoke of a family she assisted with a mother who was the only source of income and had to take unpaid time off to care for a child with COVID-19," the release states.
"The family had only a couple of days' worth of food left before receiving the food box. It came as a relief to the family that they could stay home, have food and not further spread the virus."
"After hearing of the impact this program was having in our community, we were glad to be able to help," Fred Mays, WMNM manager, said in the release.
Each box contains over 50 items that easily combine to make family meals. Close to 90 individual meals are included in each box. The program is designed to allow those in crisis to have time to mitigate the situation until they can find a more sustainable food source.
In 2020, 1,600 food boxes were distributed. As the need for food continues to grow, the number of boxes distributed will also increase, the release said.
The 145,000 meals provided through the Emergency Food Box Program were provided by the Airport Walmart Neighborhood Market, Hot Springs Giving Circle, the United Way of the Ouachitas, the United Methodist Outreach, the Hot Springs Affiliate of the Arkansas Community Foundation along with food drives and donations.
