Walmart is now selling COVID-19 test kits designed to be used at home.
Available on Walmart.com and SamsClub.com, the myLAB Box test kits offer two different collection methods – a nasal swab or a saliva test.
“Offering options allows individuals to choose the sample collection method that is right for them depending on what type of sample they would like to provide (nasal swab vs. saliva), if they want a sample to be tested for flu and the ship-to-home delivery time,” Lori Flees, SVP and COO, Walmart U.S. Health & Wellness said in a statement.
To get a kit, customers purchase a code providing access to a health survey. Once the survey is complete, a physicians’ order is generated if appropriate and the purchase is completed. The test collection kit is mailed to the customer who collects the sample and returns via mail to the lab. The results are available within 24-48 hours after the test collection kit has been received at the lab.
Some of the kits include a telehealth call if the test results are positive. Prices range from $99 for a standard nasal swab test to $125 for an express test using a saliva sample.
The myLAB test has not been cleared or approved by the FDA but has been given emergency use authorization to be used by authorized labs. It is not clear how it will be treated by insurance companies for reimbursement.
