Walmart unveils new store design with self-checkout kiosks
Walmart says the new design will create a "seamless" omni shopping experience with more self-checkout kiosks and contactless payment options.
Two local Walmart locations are closed this weekend for deep cleanings.
The Walmart Supercenter at 4650 S. Emerson Ave. closed at 2 p.m. Saturday and will reopen at 7 a.m. Monday, according to the company. And the Walmart Supercenter at 2001 E. 151st St. near the Westfield/Carmel line closed at 2 p.m. Friday and will reopen at 7 a.m. Sunday, per the store's Facebook page.
"In light of the current circumstances and out of an abundance of caution, we’re taking additional steps to protect the health and safety of our customers and associates as we continue serving the community," the Facebook post announcing the temporary closure of the 151st Street location said.
Walmart didn't immediately respond to questions about what those specific circumstances were or whether other Central Indiana locations would close this weekend. The company said the closures are part of a program to clean and sanitize the buildings.
In a statement to IndyStar about the Emerson Avenue location's temporary closure, Walmart said: "These protocols are in addition to the extensive measures we’ve put in place during the pandemic to help protect our associates and customers, including installing sneeze guards at registers, temperature checks and mandatory mask-wearing for associates, placing social distancing signage and enacting emergency leave policy for associates who are unable or uncomfortable coming to work."
Walmart said it will continue to conduct health screens and temperature checks of employees and provide them with masks and gloves when the stores reopen while continuing to require customers to wear facial coverings in the store.
