DETROIT -- As autonomous vehicles become more commonplace and grocery stores are expanding home delivery options, General Motors and Walmart have announced a partnership to pilot a delivery program using autonomous vehicles.
Using several Chevrolet Volt models, the companies will test the service in Scottsdale, Arizona early next year, according to the Associated Press. While the goal is to offer fully autonomous driverless delivery options, the first test runs will involve a human driver being in the car as a backup driver and to deliver the packages to customers.
Walmart plans to offer the service to customers so they can place an order online and receive a contact-less delivery shortly thereafter. It’s one of several autonomous projects being researched by Walmart according to the AP.
In April, Walmart launched an express delivery service at more than 2,800 of its stores that allows the company to reach 65% of U.S. households. A GM spokesman said Walmart plans to start slow with the autonomous service and increase the number as the program progresses.
