Alabama Walmart boards up windows ahead of election then takes them down - AL.com

UPDATE: The Walmart has removed the boards.

Stores across the country – including at least one in Alabama – have boarded up windows and stepped up security ahead of Tuesday’s election.

Social media users shared photos of the Walmart at the old Eastwood Mall location in Birmingham with windows covered by plywood.

Walmart has not responded to AL.com’s request for comment on the security measures.

The chain earlier announced it was removing guns and ammunition from sales floors only to reverse course and say it would return the items to some locations.

“After civil unrest earlier this week resulted in damage to several of our stores, consistent with actions we took over the summer, we asked stores to move firearms and ammunition from the sales floor to a secure location in the back of the store in an abundance of caution,” the company said in a statement. “As the current incidents have remained geographically isolated, we have made the decision to begin returning these products to the sales floor today (Friday).”

Across the country, retailers have reported they are boarding up windows and increasing security as a precaution against potential unrest following the election.

High-end retailers Nordstrom, Tiffany & Company and Saks Fifth Avenue – as well as national chain Target – confirmed they are taking precautionary steps to protest stores and staff but most aren’t detailing what steps are being taken.

In Michigan, the Dearborn Police responded to comments about boarded windows at local Marshall stores. “According to companywide directive to board the windows prior to election day,” police said, adding police weren’t aware of any specific threats against the store.
