GameStop PS5 preorders live now, plus the latest at Amazon, Walmart and more - CNET

Update, Sept. 25: GameStop appears to have opened the preorder window. Several CNET staffers clicked through and were "in line" for several minutes, then landed at an order page -- with a "not available" message. Your mileage may vary (hopefully).

The PS5 is already proving to be a must-have gift this holiday season. The next-generation Sony gaming console will hit stores on Nov. 12 in two versions: a $400 digital-only version and a $500 model with Blu-ray. (If you have good broadband and don't have a need for optical discs -- used games, Blu-ray movies, old PS4 games -- we recommend you go with the $400 one.) But after most retailers jumped the gun and started taking online preorders a day early, the resulting traffic crashed websites like they were being hit with denial-of-service attacks. Near-instantaneous sellouts disappointed a lot of gamers.

Thankfully, there's good news in sight, starting with this tweet on Thursday from GameStop:

That's following a Sony tweet from Saturday, Sept. 19, in which the company apologized for the preorder snafus and said it "will release more PS5 consoles for preorder." Furthermore, the company pledged "more PS5s will be available through the end of the year."

At this moment, we can't find any consoles available for preorder, though there are still some accessories (like the new DualSense Wireless Controller) that you can easily reserve. In the meantime, we've aggregated the preorder pages for major retailers below, so that you can easily browse the status of their inventory at any given time. Feel free to click through the links below -- maybe you'll get lucky.

If you're an Xbox fan, meanwhile, you can try your luck with preorders for that next-gen console. The $300 Xbox Series S and $500 Xbox Series X are slated to hit stores on Nov. 10, two days before the PS5.

GameStop sold through its original preorder console inventory, but as of this morning there's a virtual queue you can get into. (Click the button below.) You can also order some PS5 accessories:

At Amazon's HQ for the PS5, you can see eye-candy images of PS5 accessories like the DualSense charging station, Pulse 3D wireless headset and HD camera. But click through to the actual console page, and you'll find no way to order at present.

By my count, Best Buy's preorder inventory lasted the longest, but it eventually succumbed to demand. You can still get the accessories, though.

Walmart is sold out of preorders too. The controller is still available, though:

Target was one of the first retailers to sell out. You can still preorder a controller:

Sony was letting users register here for the opportunity to preorder a PS5, but as of Thursday night, the page says "Registration is now closed."
