Walmart permanently closing its only store in Princeton - NJ.com

Retail giant Walmart will permanently close its only Princeton location next month, a company spokesman told NJ Advance Media.

The 135,000-square-foot store, which opened in 1995, is located at 101 Nassau Park Blvd. It will close Aug. 21.

Walmart said the store is closing because of declining financial performance, but the coronavirus pandemic is not responsible.

“After a careful and thoughtful review process, we have made the difficult decision to close our Walmart store in Princeton,” the spokesman said. “The decision is based on several factors, including the store’s overall performance.”

There are no plans to relocate the store. The 200-plus employees who work there will have the opportunity to transfer to another store, Walmart said. The nearest locations are in Hamilton at 1700 Nottingham Way and East Windsor at 839 Route 130.

A liquidation sale is not currently in progress. Walmart said it expects to sell most inventory prior to the closing date, and any remaining perishable items could be donated to local hunger relief organizations.

There are currently about 70 Walmart stores in New Jersey. The retailer also has been offering some noteworthy deals online recently.

Walmart also recently announced it will not be open on Thanksgiving Day, bucking a trend from recent years.

It has been a rough few months for the brick-and-mortar retail industry, which already had been struggling before the pandemic hit.

Brooks Brothers, JCPenney, Nordstrom, New York & Company and Sur La Table are among the many retail companies that have recently announced store closures.
