The Aberdeen Police Department deployed multiple officers to Walmart on Sunday in anticipation of a possible riot.
Police Chief Carl Colasacco said he was aware of protests at other Walmart locations. Using information on social media, he determined the strong police presence at the store was justified.
Colasacco said the Walmart in Aberdeen was closed shortly after 5 p.m. by the manager “out of concern for his employees and his patrons.”
The death of George Floyd has prompted demonstrations at other Walmart stores. A similar protest on Saturday at a Walmart in nearby Cumberland County, where Floyd was born, was accompanied by reports of looting and vandalism.
“We’re hoping if people do show up it will be a peaceful protest,” Colasacco said.
A small group of demonstrators arrived in Aberdeen shortly after 8 p.m.
Nearly every officer from the Aberdeen Police Department was summoned to the store. Members of the Moore County Sheriff’s Office and the Aberdeen Fire and Rescue Department were also at the scene.
