Home near Walmart in Eau Claire sells for $1,850,000 - WQOW TV News 18

Eau Claire (WQOW) - You've likely seen it once or twice. The Eau Claire home famous for its location. Now that home, located directly in front of Walmart, is officially sold.

The sold sign was put on the house Wednesday, and News 18 learned about the woman who lived there for years and infamously refused to sell.

Irene Cardinal and her husband George built their home on 3801 Gateway Drive in 1952.

When Walmart officials offered to buy the property for their new store three decades ago, they were turned down. In 2018, Irene passed away, and the house went up for sale.

"Neither one of them really wanted to sell it," said Irene's brother Ronald Muszynski. "I guess they offered them a pretty good price after that, but I mean, it's the only home they really had of their own, you know? And they wanted to stay there."

Irene was one of 11 children, and her last surviving sibling and younger brother Ronald Muszynski remembers her fondly.

"She was full of life. She was wanting to do things and get things done. She was a worker. And she enjoyed going out and having fun," said Muszynski.

According to Kleven Real Estate, Kwik Trip recently closed on the home for a final sale price of $1,850,000.

Real estate agent Arne Kleven, the listing agent for the home, said the location is what makes it valuable.

"Highly visible. It's got over two acres of land. It's a good fit for the area with Walmart and Sam's Club and all the other commercial properties out here in this area," said Kleven.

And Muszynski said the house will be missed.

"I kind of hate to see the place go. It's kind of a, almost a landmark," said Muszynski.

He said Irene also enjoyed fishing, hunting, and the great outdoors.

As News 18 previously reported, Kwik Trip plans to tear the house down and build a gas station, car wash, and convenience store in its place.

The proceeds from the sale will be divided between three relatives.
