Cary, N.C. — An unusual new gifting trend is becoming more popular this holiday season -- stores are giving away empty gift cards to shoppers.
It happened to WRAL's Nia Harden at the Walmart off Tryon Road in Cary. When she reached out to others on social media, she learned it was happening a lot.
Someone on Facebook said they ordered groceries online with Walmart. When their order arrived, there was a thank you bag that included a gift card to give to someone else.
Walmart calls it the "Walmart Gift Card To Go." When shoppers order something online or have a pickup in store, they include a gift card you can load money on at home and give to someone else.
Walmart says it’s a last minute gift option.
Others on social media said Ulta and Victoria's Secret are doing the same thing.
Do people actually use these cards? People who responded to a post on the WRAL Smart Shopper Facebook pages said yes, that the gift card comes in handy and saves a trip to the store.
According to Walmart, the program only lasts through the holidays.
