Do you wish you didn't have to spend so much time buying groceries or remembering what to put on your list?
What if you could just say, "Hey Google, talk to Walmart," and start filling up that grocery cart?
Soon, that will be possible as Walmart brings its new voice ordering on Google Assistant, launched earlier this month, to some of its 85 stores in Mississippi.
In addition to its Voice Order service, Walmart will be offering grocery delivery in some areas, expanding grocery store pickup and adding online pickup towers to several locations, the company said in a news release this month.
It is also planning an estimated $45.8 million in store improvements and renovations in Mississippi this year, including at its metro Jackson locations in Pearl, Clinton and Flowood.
“We can’t wait for Mississippi customers to experience the new and innovative ways Walmart is enhancing the retail experience,” James Winchester, regional manager of Walmart in Mississippi, said in a news release.
How does Walmart Voice Order with Google Assistant work?
With a Google Assistant, Walmart customers talk to their devices — for example, on their Android phones and iPhones, watches or Google Home Hub — and their requested items are added to their grocery cart.
Orders are tracked by the device so, if a customer tells the Google Assistant to order "milk," their favorite brand of milk is automatically put on the list.
The list does not have to be complied all at once; items can be added over days.
While Walmart is kicking off with Google, others are expected to be added, the company said on its website.
It should be noted that Walmart Voice Order is only available to customers that offer store pickup or delivery.
Walmart grocery delivery and pickup expanding in Mississippi
Grocery delivery will become available at 14 Mississippi stores in 2019 but a list those stores was not immediately available. Shipping on the service is $9.95.
Grocery store pickup will be expanded to an additional 18 stores in Mississippi by the end of the year, the company's news release stated, though specific stores were not immediately available.
How do Walmart online pickup towers work?
Pickup towers will be unveiled at 15 stores, benefiting customers who have placed an order online. Once their order is ready, customers approach a "16-feet tall, high-tech vending machine" located in the store, scan a barcode sent to their smartphone and retrieve their items. The machine can "fulfill a customer's online order in less than a minute."
