SAN JOSE — Walmart has decided to shut one of its neighborhood markets in San Jose, a decision that will idle more than 80 employees of the grocery store, the retailing giant said Wednesday.

The Walmart Neighborhood Market that is being closed is one of the larger stores in west San Jose’s Westgate Mall.

“After a careful and thoughtful review process, we have made the difficult decision to close the Walmart Neighborhood Market at 1600 Saratoga Ave.” in San Jose, Walmart said Wednesday.

The shutdown of the store, which is scheduled for April 19, will affect 83 employees.

“The decision is based on several factors including the store’s overall performance,” Walmart said.

The retailer operates 11 Walmart Neighborhood Market stores in the  Bay Area, according to a web search. There are two stores in Vacaville, one in Rohnert Park, one in Vallejo, one in San Ramon, one in Pleasanton, one in Santa Clara and four in San Jose, including the one slated for closure.

“We will continue to serve customers in new ways across California through expanded Online Grocery, store remodels and many other innovations aimed at saving them time and money,” Walmart said.

The retailer also noted that people can shop at its walmart.com site.

Walmart said that it hopes most of the store’s associates will continue their respective careers at Walmart by transferring to one of the nearby stores.

The associates will be paid through May 24 of this year unless they transfer to another location. After that date, if they do not transfer, eligible associates will receive a severance package.

“We will continue our investments in training to give our associates the skills to succeed and a path to grow their careers,” Walmart stated.

Walmart also operates numerous Walmart stores in the Bay Area, including a number of Walmart Supercenter outlets.
